Footwear Sample Development: Why We Confirm Materials and Design Details First

“I’ve never had to answer so many questions. Normally, I just send the picture and the designer figures it out.”

A DTC brand owner shared this reaction during a recent high-heeled sandal footwear sample development project with JINXIU. Her brand sells women’s clothing and shoes, and she had worked with other footwear suppliers before.

She sent several different angles of AI-generated images of black high-heeled sandals with long fringe and requested a sample in EU size 42. Beyond the images and sample size, they were all the information she told us.

We asked about other details, like the materials, colors, heel height, platform height, fringe, and closure. We also found existing heel and platform options for her planned bulk size range and sent photographs and videos for review.

The questions surprised her. But for us, they were part of our normal development process.

We follow this process whether a buyer provides an AI image, a hand-drawn sketch, photographs, a footwear tech pack, or a physical shoe. The source of the reference does not change the need for confirmation.

A buyer conversation illustrating why JINXIU confirms design details before sample making.

First Confirmation: Understanding the Buyer’s Requirements

A design reference helps us understand the intended appearance. It does not always explain every detail needed to make the shoe.

Before sourcing materials for custom shoe samples, we clarify the requirements that will guide our work.

DetailWhat we confirm
MaterialsUpper, lining, sock/inner lining, and outsole preferences, including important texture and finish requirements.
ColorsDesired colors and any available references or swatches.
Heel and platformHeights, shapes, proportions, and whether existing components are suitable for the footwear.
Fringe and decorationsMaterial, length, width, fullness, placement, and attachment, or if customization is required.
ClosureHow the shoe opens and fastens, and what the preferred appearance of the closure should be.
SizingSample size, fit requirements, and the planned bulk size range. Open Mold sizes are suitable for bulk production after sampling.

Buyers do not need every answer ready before contacting us, but should try to tell us MORE. We can explain available options and recommend practical solutions.

However, an unanswered question should become a decision we must discuss. It may take much time. Otherwise, we would be interpreting the buyer’s requirements from our own perspective, which may lead to a different result.

Case Example: Clarifying the Closure

In this sandal project, the images did not show how the closure would work for putting the shoe on and taking it off.

The buyer wanted a clean, seamless-looking appearance. We discussed a concealed back zipper and clarified how the closure should fit the intended design. We needed to agree on a construction approach before making the sample.

Second Confirmation: Approving the Actual Materials

Once the initial requirements are clear, we begin shoe material sourcing and look for suitable materials, color swatches, and components.

We then photograph and film the proposed selections for the buyer’s review.

Confirming what the buyer wants and approving what we actually find are two separate steps.

For example, agreeing on “black leather” gives us a sourcing direction. It does not approve every black leather available. Grain, gloss, softness, thickness, and finish can affect the appearance of the finished shoe.

The buyer needs to review the actual material we propose to use. We also explain relevant differences or alternatives and obtain approval before sample making begins.

If photographs and videos are insufficient for a particular decision, we can discuss sending physical swatches for review, or let JINXIU decide, and then ship more swatches with the sample shipment for the buyer’s further inspection.

When Can JINXIU Make Development Decisions for the Buyer?

We can use a reference image to propose materials and construction methods and make a sample. However, our choices may differ from what the buyer has in mind.

We have encountered this difference in previous projects. A shoe can follow the overall appearance of a reference while still differing in material, texture, color, or decorative details.

For that reason, we distinguish between our ability to make a development decision and the buyer’s approval for us to make it.

Some buyers explicitly authorize us to select materials or resolve particular design details. In those cases, we agree on the scope of that authorization and proceed within it. Without clear authorization, we seek confirmation before using the proposed selections.

Our communication also continues during sample making. Progress photographs and videos help the buyer see how the agreed design is taking shape and allow us to discuss questions that arise during the work.

Together, clear approvals and progress updates protect both sides: the buyer has visibility into the development, and our team has an agreed basis for the decisions we make.

Physical Reference Shoes Still Require Material Approval

A physical shoe gives us more information about its shape, construction, and materials. It does not automatically approve the materials we find locally.

We still show the buyer the proposed materials and color swatches. Any differences from the original reference need to be discussed and accepted.

A material that looks like a close match to us may not meet the buyer’s expectations. This confirmation helps establish a shared basis for the sample.

Considering the Bulk Size Range During Sample Development

For this project, we looked for existing heel and platform options with the planned bulk size range in mind, rather than considering only the EU 42 sample.

We found options and sent photographs and videos for the buyer to confirm their appearance.

Suitable existing components may avoid the need to open new molds when the buyer accepts them. Their compatibility with the selected last and overall construction still needs to be checked during development.

This allows the buyer to consider available options before committing to a particular approach.

We do not want to tell the buyer suddenly, when he/she is placing a bulk order, that the buyer has to pay a new mould fee for bulk production. So if other molds are required for mass production, we hope that you can know as early as possible.

The Same Process for New and Returning Buyers

Long-term cooperation helps us understand a buyer’s preferences. Each new footwear design still introduces its own material and construction requirements.

A previously approved leather is not automatically suitable for another style. A familiar color description does not automatically approve a newly sourced swatch.

JINXIU therefore follows the same process with new and returning buyers:

  1. Clarify the design and material requirements.
  2. Source suitable materials, colors, and components.
  3. Present the proposed selections through photographs and videos.
  4. Obtain approval for the proposed selections, or clear authorization to make specified decisions, before making the sample.

The relationship makes communication easier, but it does not replace confirmation for the current project.

How Confirmation Helps Reduce Sampling Disputes

Without confirmation, a supplier may choose an available leather, interpret the fringe differently, or add a closure the buyer did not expect.

Those choices may seem reasonable to the supplier while producing a sample that differs from what the buyer had in mind.

Clarifying decisions beforehand helps reduce avoidable differences and unnecessary rework. It also provides a clearer reference when reviewing the sample.

Physical evaluation, fit testing, and revisions may still be necessary. Material approval establishes a better starting point; it does not mean the first sample will need no changes after testing.

When choosing a footwear development partner in China, ask how materials and design decisions are confirmed; it is an essential step for JINXIU, not only how quickly a sample can be made.

What to Prepare Before Requesting Custom Shoe Samples

To begin footwear sample development with JINXIU, send us:

  • Design images, sketches, a technical package, or a physical reference.
  • The required sample size and planned bulk size range.
  • Material and color preferences, if available; images of other shoes also are ok.
  • Heel and platform requirements(shape, height), where relevant.
  • Design elements that must be preserved.
  • Details where you would welcome our recommendations.
  • Others you want the footwear to look like.

You do not need a complete footwear tech pack to start the conversation. We can help identify missing information, source suitable options, and guide you through the confirmation process.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can JINXIU develop shoe samples from photographs or AI images?

Yes. The images provide a starting point. We clarify missing specifications, source suitable materials and components, and obtain approval before making the sample.

2. Do materials still need approval if I send a physical shoe?

Yes. We present the materials and color swatches proposed for your project and confirm any differences or alternatives before using them.

3. Why do returning customers need to approve materials again?

Each new design can have different requirements. Previous cooperation does not automatically approve selections for the current style.
